The Complete Wig Routine for Sensitive Skin — Glue, Melt & Removal

If you have sensitive skin, every step of your wig routine matters. Not just the glue you choose, but how you apply it, how long you wear it, and how you take it off. Here's the complete routine that works.

Step 1 — Prep your skin

This is the step most people skip, and it's the reason most installs fail early or cause irritation. Before you apply anything, clean your hairline thoroughly with a gentle, alcohol-free cleanser. Remove all traces of oil, moisturizer, and product buildup.

If you have oily skin, apply a light mattifying powder along your hairline after cleansing. This gives the adhesive a clean surface to bond to and extends your wear time significantly.

Never apply glue over moisturizer or SPF. Both break down adhesive and increase the risk of irritation.

Step 2 — Apply your glue correctly

For sensitive skin, less is always more. Apply 3 thin layers of Cabell Waterproof Lace Wig Glue above your hairline, letting each layer dry clear before the next. You'll know it's ready when it turns from white to clear and feels tacky to the touch.

Thin layers dry faster, bond more evenly, and are much gentler on sensitive skin than one thick application. For a longer hold of up to 15 days, add 1 more layers for a total of 4.

Step 3 — Place and press

Once your glue is tacky, carefully place your lace wig along your hairline. Press firmly with your fingers for 30 to 60 seconds. Then tie a satin melt band around your hairline for 10 to 15 minutes — this creates a stronger bond and ensures an even, flat finish.

Step 4 — Finish with melting spray

Once your melt band is off, apply a light layer of Cabell Lace Wig Melting Spray along your hairline. This blends your lace seamlessly into your skin for an invisible finish. For glueless wigs, this step alone can give you a natural melt without any adhesive.

Step 5 — Maintain your install

The biggest enemy of a long-lasting install on sensitive skin is oil. Keep moisturizers, serums, and edge controls away from your hairline during wear. Sleep with a satin scarf or bonnet every night — this protects your edges and preserves the adhesive bond.

If your lace starts to lift at the temples after several days, apply a small amount of glue to the lifted area, press, and let it dry before continuing your day.

Step 6 — Remove gently

Never pull or force your lace off. Apply a gentle oil-based remover or a dedicated lace glue remover — along your hairline. Let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes to break down the adhesive. Then gently lift the lace starting from the ear, moving slowly toward the center.

After removal, clean your hairline with a gentle cleanser to remove all adhesive residue. Give your skin a day to breathe before your next install if possible.

Why this routine works for sensitive skin

The combination of thin layers, natural ingredients, and gentle removal minimizes contact time and reduces the risk of reaction. Cabell's formula is alcohol-free, latex-free and silicone-free — the three main causes of scalp irritation in most lace glues on the market.
